Burgundy partnerships with foreign communities are formalized by an agreement of cooperation. They are 5 in number:
- Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, since 1962;
- The Region of Central Bohemia, Czech Republic, since 2001;
- Opole Voivodeship, Poland, since 2003;
- The Western Cape Province, South Africa, since 2002;
- Maule Region, Chile, since 2009.
The Burgundy region wished to base its international partnerships on concrete action around common interests and issues shared by the regional partners and meet the expectations of the Burgundians. Indeed, if the institutional relationships between communities are essential to promote and strengthen decentralization, international cooperation is also expanding the service territory and their capacity for innovation. Its purpose is to bring together the strengths of the partner areas (communities, youth associations, economic actors etc..) And thus participate in the construction of an open and inclusive.
The Decentralised Cooperation *, which means all the actions taken by Burgundy in its international partnerships, allows the Region to:
- encourage the opening of the Burgundians abroad;
- enhance the advantages of Burgundy, expertise and know-how of the action in Burgundy;
- make Burgundy a haven in promoting its economic potential, technology and tourism;
- improve regional policies through the implementation of reciprocal exchanges of experiences and expertise with partner regions.
