In 2008, in Burgundy, bee colonies have declined by over 40% against 10-20% on average over the past ten years. The disappearance of bees, a sign of ecological imbalance, is ultimately a threat to biodiversity.
An experimental operation is launched, eight hives and will be installed in an agricultural college in the Dijon with two sites - at Plombieres-les-Dijon and Quétigny. If the site Quétigny, east of Dijon, is located on the plains of the great cultures of Genlis, that of Plombières, west of Dijon, offers nursery and forest, near the Burgundy Canal.
An educational program is provided on both sites to test the hardiness of bees (black bee of Burgundy) in this environment. Both sites will host eight hives (four each) including maintenance, monitoring and harvesting honey will be entrusted to a beekeeper. The school-and-ad'ores already designed a curriculum around the hives: working groups of students plan to create a honey in an institution; science project testing the quality of honey in the middle Urban and peri-urban primary schools visit the cities of Quetigny and Plombières particular. Eventually, a research program on behavioral analysis of pollinators should also emerge.
Meanwhile, awareness among the general public to increase awareness of the lives of bees and the establishment of a place of education programs are being considered.
Units of the Institute Buffon (INRA, University), specializing in insect behavior, will provide scientific support.
This complements the actions already in place as part of the contract inter-progress (CIP) Beekeeping in Burgundy, it demonstrates the commitment of Burgundy for beekeeping and preservation of biodiversity.
