A tool to calculate the embodied energy of buildings
Drawing on its experience in sustainable housing, the Regional Council of Burgundy wished to establish a tool for calculating the embodied energy of buildings. Objective: to support the project leaders in the design of low energy building or rehabilitation of existing buildings.
It is the engineering CYCLECO who worked on this tool and tested it on a dozen buildings in Burgundy. Given the enthusiasm of building owners and contractors to support tool design and decision, the Regional Council and ADEME wish to develop by 2011 a computer application known. It will meet two main requirements:
- Compliance with the standards of life cycle analysis (LCA, including the latest standard ILCD Handbook 2010),
- Ergonomics and ease of use.
This application relies on international databases of reference. It will be widely disseminated in Burgundy and France.
Development cost of this computer application: 220 000 €, including € 122 000 financed by the regional council.
What is embodied energy?
Embodied energy is the energy used to produce, implement and then remove the end of life materials used in building. The building is more energy efficient, more energy for its construction is important in the full energy balance of the building.
